Delft We, Q*Bird extend our heartiest congratulations to Charles H. Bennett and Gilles Brassard on receiving the ACM A.M. Turing Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize in Computing”, recognising their foundational contributions to quantum cryptography and quantum information science.

Their introduction of quantum key distribution protocols, most notably BB84, established a new framework for secure communication, one where security is guaranteed by the fundamental laws of quantum physics rather than computational assumptions. This breakthrough continues to drive the global transition towards quantum resilient communication infrastructure.

Today, quantum cryptography and its underlying principles are no longer confined to theory or laboratory environments. Q*Bird is actively deploying quantum secure communication networks across critical infrastructure, research and telecom ecosystems in Europe, translating foundational science into operational systems.

“At Q*Bird, we see this award as recognition of a transition that is already underway,” said Dr. Ingrid Romijn, CEO and Co-Founder of Q*Bird. “The protocols introduced by Bennett and Brassard are now being implemented in live infrastructure, where secure communication must withstand both current and future threats. Quantum security is no longer a future concept, it is a necessity today.”

Q*Bird’s Falqon® Series, based on Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD), builds directly on these foundations, eliminating detector-side vulnerabilities and enabling scalable, multi-node quantum secure networks over existing fibre infrastructure. These systems are designed for interoperability and deployment in complex, real-world environments, supporting critical applications in government, finance, telecom and defence.

Dr. Joshua Slater, CTO of Q*Bird, added: “Bennett and Brassard’s work showed that information itself behaves differently in a quantum world. Turning that insight into reliable, scalable systems is one of the defining engineering challenges of our time. It is a challenge the industry is now actively addressing.”

At Q*Bird, we are part of this transition, bridging the gap between foundational science and real-world impact. By contributing to the development and deployment of quantum secure communication networks, we are helping to ensure that the next generation of digital infrastructure is resilient, sovereign and future-proof.

This recognition marks a broader turning point, quantum technology is moving beyond the research domain and becoming part of the foundation of global digital infrastructure.

From securing critical communications to enabling trusted digital ecosystems, the impact of their work extends far beyond the quantum community and is increasingly relevant to society as a whole!
